Autogenic Training (or „Autogenes Training“, as it is originally called in German) is a relaxation technique. It’s been proven to alleviate stress and its symptoms, such as sleep disorders, migraines, concentration issues, and muscle tension.
Simply put, you will learn to calm down, let go of stress, and relax. At any time, wherever you are. Sounds simple? It is!
What Is Autogenic Training?
Autogenic Training is a structured way of switching from an alert state to a deeply relaxed state. It’s been proven that everybody can learn it. As you might expect, that will require you to practice (it’s called „training“ for a reason). But don’t worry: Your practicing will consist of you unwinding for about 15 minutes every day. That doesn’t sound too stressful, does it :-)
Autogenic Training consists of simple exercises, such as imagining your arms to be heavy. In that sense, it is a bit like meditation, but to my experience, much easier to do. Depending on how you count, there are 6 to 9 basic exercises. It takes about 4 to 8 weeks to learn them. During this time, you will need to practice. The more you practice, the better your body and mind will become at letting go of stress and tension, and drifting into a deep state of relaxation.
What Does Autogenic Training Do?
The exercises you learn teach your body to let go of tension. In doing so, it will switch to a deeply relaxed state called trance. That’s the same state as you’re in when you’re in hypnosis (in fact, Autogenic Training was developed as a form of self-hypnosis). In trance, our body’s functions switch to „recharge and recuperate“: For example, the large and deep muscles relax, and more blood flows to the inner organs.
It’s been shown that practicing for just 15 minutes every day can lead to significant improvements of stress and any symptoms and illnesses caused by it: Migraines, sleeplessness, tension, bowel disorders, concentration issues, neurodermitis, etc.
How You Can Learn Autogenic Training
In our modern times, there’s hardly anything you can’t learn on YouTube. Search for a bit, and you may find the perfect audio/video to listen to while you relax.
